What is the TPD?
One of the terms you may see pop up a lot in the vaping world is “TPD compliant”, so what does this actually mean?
Initially introduced in May 2014, the TPD, aka The Tobacco Products Directive refers to a set of rules and regulations instated by the EU. This directive covers everything involving the sale of tobacco products ingredients, manufacturer, presentation, and marketing.
Why is the tpd important?
The TPD keeps our tobacco and vape products safe, non compliant products may contain dangerous chemicals or be of poor quality, breaking after only a few uses.
- Safe ingredients: The TPD stipulates that e-liquids sold in the UK must contain only food grade flavourings. Additionally dangerous chemicals previously found in flavourings such as diacetyl are banned under the TPD.
- Honest labelling: E-liquids and nicotine pouches must list all their active ingredients, keeping customers well-informed.
- Quality products: The TPD guarantees your products a certain level of quality, from the materials vape kits are manufactured with, to the flavourings in your e-liquids.
- Nicotine strength cap: E-liquids can only contain 20mg of nicotine, keeping it at a safe level that still effectively satisfies cravings.
How to tell if your product is TPD compliant
Follow this simple checklist when you're unsure if a product is TPD compliant:
- Nicotine strength: TPD compliant e-liquids will contain no more than 20mg of nicotine.
- Capacity: Tanks and pods cannot exceed 2ml. However, some devices do have 10ml refill containers as well as a 2ml pod/ tank (which is allowed under the TPD).
- MHRA database: Search the MHRA`s list of notified products. The MHRA applies to medicines and medical equipment which vaping products fall under as an alternative to cigarettes.
- Warning labels: TPD compliant products will feature a warning label stating “ This product contains nicotine which is a highly addictive substance.”
- Ingredients: E-liquids are not allowed to contain any stimulants like caffeine or taurine.
- Source: Ensure you have bought your product from a reputable, well-known supplier, as their products will be held to strict TPD standards.
